Understanding Your Visa Options
Both the UK Marriage and Fiancée visas allow your partner to join you in the UK. The Marriage visa is for those already married, while the Fiancée visa allows time for marriage after arrival. We help you compare both to choose the best path.
Main Differences Between UK Marriage and Fiancée Visas
The UK Marriage Visa and the UK Fiancée Visa are two important options for partners of British citizens or settled persons who wish to join their loved ones in the United Kingdom. Although both lead to settlement pathways, they differ in terms of eligibility, purpose, and conditions.
The Marriage Visa is designed for couples who are already legally married. To apply, the couple must prove the legitimacy of their marriage and the intention to live together permanently in the UK. Once approved, the applicant can work immediately and usually receives a visa valid for 33 months if applied from outside the UK.
In contrast, the Fiancée Visa is intended for unmarried partners who plan to get married in the UK. This visa grants entry for six months, during which the couple must marry. Crucially, the Fiancée Visa holder cannot work until the marriage has taken place and they have switched to a Spouse Visa.
Both visas require the UK-based partner to meet financial requirements and provide adequate accommodation. English language ability and evidence of a genuine relationship are also mandatory.
Choosing between these visas depends on your current relationship status and your plans. If you're already married, the Marriage Visa is the appropriate route. If you’re engaged and planning a wedding in the UK, the Fiancée Visa is more suitable. Understanding these distinctions helps ensure a smoother and more successful visa process.
